The history of Caitanya Vaisnavism has been the topic of many books in the English language. Although different aspects of the Caitanya tradition have been discussed, very little effort has gone into a more serious articulation of the process of arcanam or deity worship. In light of the need to gain a better understanding of a tradition becoming more and more prominent, this book will address the following questions:

- In which sense can apparently immovable material object be considered saintly and thus worthy of worship?
- How is the practise of arcanam (formal deity worship) considered to be means for approaching and being approached by God?
- Is there a common ground relating arcanam, the Caitanya Vaisnava tradition, and Judeo-Christian tradition which dismisses all types of "idolatry"?
